Song of the Week #5 Googly Eyes

Here’s where I get to let my weird out a little… I have always been fascinated by strange people, places, things, music, etc. Especially the circus/sideshow/freakshow/outsider art, etc…

This song is inspired by a homeless artist who I met in a funky hair salon in downtown St. Pete called Star Booty. I was perusing the various posters and patches when a woman came in and said, “Hi, my name is Sunshine, do you want to buy my art?” When I said that I’d probably like to see it first, she immediately pulled out a Styrofoam  tray with a cutout picture of kittens pasted on it, obviously taken from a magazine. That would have been enough to seal the deal for me, but there was more…

Each of the three kittens had googly eyes glued on them so that when she moved the tray, their eyes googled at me! It was so awesome that immediately paid her asking price of $3 and became the proud owner of my first googly eyes art piece.

I just got home from a soul charging weekend in New Orleans. I participated in The 17th annual Cutting Edge Music Business Conference where I had 2 performance showcases and had the chance to network and learn from all sorts of industry professionals. What a blast!

Last Bus is based on a true story about catching the last bus out of New Orleans the dreadful evening before hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and surrounding areas on  6:10 am 8/29/05.

I have been back since and the old saying, “you can’t keep a good man down” has a profound new meaning to me. I love New Orleans.

I am scheduled to play at the Galvez Restaurant in the French Market 912 N. Peters St. New Orleans, LA  next Friday 8/28/09 8:30pm.

I

Wake

Up around 2:22 pm.

Armored truck bumps right into my house/van

I grab my trumpet and a cup of coffee.

Then I sit down on the corner and play whatever I please

playing with the street orchestra. drifting off into the abyss of music

Gotta get to Jersey for a recording session

Got just enough money to get on the bus

Minding my own business not a care in the world

Appereared a hooded man with a gun in his pocket

He shoved it in my gut and said “gimmie all your loot”

In that moment was eternity

Fight or flight

Choose your own adventure

I might die

So I said here it is. Every last penny from the street

“Wheres the big bills sucka?” said the robber.

I play music on the street. I made every last penny you see right there on the street.

I’m trying to get ahead and catch that bus…

He looked around and said “Take your money man. Watch out around here”

He took off…

I got on the bus

unmugged

and with a newfound gratitude for life.
